The Bootshaus beer garden is located near the Isar and close to the zoo in the Thalkirchen district of central Munich. The property has existed 300 years old and was originally an inn for passing horse carriages. Since about 50 years the beer garden is open to the public. The current building dates back to 1951 and is owned by NaturFreunde (Nature Friends Association) for which it serves as a club meeting venue. The NaturFreunde is an international organisation with members in 40 countries with the aim to protect and preserve nature.

The Bootshaus is quite unknown in Munich. The beer garden is not usually mentioned in other guides and gives a somewhat inconspicuous impression towards bypassers as there is no "beer garden" sign that lead new guests to this idyllic family beer garden. The district Chairman Oliver Schimmel says, "the beer garden in known to visitors mainly through word-of-mouth. The small kitchen is is not equipped to cater to too many guests at the same time. On sunny days the beer garden is packed with families, who often unfold their picnic blankets on the large meadow due to lack of seats". The beer garden is enclosed within a fenced area and with only one entrance/exit parents can let their kids run around and explore the large property.

The beer has 250 seats of mixed regular tables and chairs and traditional beer garden benches. There is no serviced area and guests are welcome to unfold their own home cooked meals on any of the tables. Besides Currywurst and french fries, the kitchen offers a variety of traditional Bavarian beer garden meals, such as Obadza and Wurstsalat (sausage salad). Coffee and a selection of delicious homemade cakes are also available at the food stall. The prices are family friendly and even a Helles (lager) from Hacker Pschorr costs only 5,80 p/Maß.

The beer garden is open from May to October when the weather is good everyday from 11am to 10pm.
